Tandridge – Golf Course Review

Golfer’s Tips

  • The driving range is within a wooded hollow, playing downhill. Due to restrictions over its length the first driver you hit will be on the 1st tee!
  • The long par 3 13th is a difficult one, so bogey might well be accepted for many. The miss is short left, where there is a little mini fairway, avoiding long and right at all costs, particularly if the hole is located on that side.

Signature Holes

  • 12th – an interesting par 5, probably a 3-shotter due to shape rather than length. Played over a valley up to the corner of a fairway on an incline, the second shot is played for position to optimise a third shot into a green perched on top of a hill, being the highest point on the course affording great views.
  • 14th – the very definition of a signature hole, a real standout. A testing hole, with a tee shot down from a significantly elevated (and tiered) tee to a generous fairway below, but with an approach back up a hill to a very sloped green surrounded by bunkers. Playing your second from the left fairway is preferable in order to hold the green.

Review:

A strong Harry Colt design, hidden away in the Surrey hills, playing into its terrain excellently and providing a very decent proposition.

Tandridge starts in relatively generous fashion, with a reasonably straight forward par 5, but by the second you feel its full force – a narrow dogleg right, ideally requiring a fade, with a longish second navigating several bunkers around a two-tiered green with the rolling Surrey hills in view beyond.

The third is somewhat similar to the second in shape, almost like a little brother, but by the excellent short 4th you are very much into the round and understanding of what Tandridge brings. The bunkering is excellent and plentiful, and the Surrey hills location, far less of a ‘golfing Mecca’ than other parts of the county, is used to create some really interesting holes.

The two nines are somewhat contrasting in terms of the landscape they sit on – the back nine is very undulating and for me the flatter front nine is perhaps a little more benign and at times feels a little claustrophobic due to holes being relatively close to each other.

The back nine immediately gets into its stride with the par 4 10th – playing downhill and then around to the left to an elevated green which is nicely framed by trees and the obligatory bunkers!

Hole 14 will be the hole you remember, a real standout playing down from a hill with incredible views, but there are many other really strong holes – 16 and 17 are two that also stand out, both shortish par 4s with tricky approaches to greens located within mounds with bunkers, long grass and drop offs aplenty.

The 18th is a good finisher, a par 4 that banks around a corner to another well protected green, all played out in front of a nice classic old clubhouse. All in all a very pleasurable place to play golf, and somewhat under the radar versus a lot of its Surrey compatriots.
